These traditional dishes are a treasury of family recipes passed down over the generations from Spanish-speaking homelands in Latin and Central America and the Caribbean.

To help cooks find authentic Latino ingredients for their traditional dishes, Familia Kitchen stocks an online store, La Tienda, selling hand-selected artisanal Latino food and kitchen products from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Santo Domingo, and more Central and Latin American countries.

The site was co-founded by Latinas in Chicago hungry for home – and home cooking. “We realized there was a need to create a trusted homecooking website for the Latinx community seeking authentic recipes and abuela-cooking. It’s how we really cook for ourselves and the people we love when we’re at home,” says founder, CEO and editor in chief Kim Caviness, who grew up in Puerto Rico and now lives in Chicago. In the delicious coquito recipe below, Family Kitchen offers a spin on this Christmas classic often called the Puerto Rican eggnog. Its Latina contributor Hillary makes it in large batches every December and it’s one of the memorable highlights of the season.

  • 2 cups rum (silver)

  • 4 yolks from large eggs

  • 1 can condensed milk

  • 1 can coconut milk

  • 1/2 to 1 can Coco Lopez

  • 1/3 cup shredded coconut

  • 2 shakes nutmeg

  • 2 to 3 star anise pods

  • 5 to 10 cloves

  • 1/2 cup cognac, brandy or whiskey


  • Mix rum, eggs, condensed milk, coconut milk, Coco Lopez, shredded coconut and nutmeg in a blender, adding one at a time so they thoroughly mix. 

  • In a separate saucepan, add alcohol, star anise and cloves and place on low heat, until it starts to boil. Take the pan off the burner and let steep, the longer the better. Usually let it cool for an hour or two.

  • Once cool, strain the star anise and clove. Place in blender and pulse blender one last time.

  • Pour coquito mixture into an empty rum bottle or a glass pitcher – preferably with a wide mouth (this makes it easier to serve). Place in the refrigerator, preferably overnight. It’s ready once it has thoroughly chilled and the consistency has thickened.

  • Serve cold, straight out of the fridge, with a final dash of nutmeg on top. Let the holidays begin!
